Obtaining a precise weight measurement for the freight can often present difficulties as LTL carriers price shipments based upon the weight as well as the freight class. You may be a shipping veteran reading this article with an industrial weight scale at your warehouse, so this may be a topic you are familiar with, but residential shippers do not often have access to a scale, and we have some tips on how to obtain an accurate weight measurement. Try locating the details of any and all model numbers for your products online, and a weight measurement may be found. In cases when you only have boxes to palletize, stand on a scale and weigh yourself first. Then, stand on the scale with boxes and subtract your body weight from the measurement, and you can target an accurate weight that way. Remember, the pallet will add about 40 pounds to the shipment, and crates may add up to or even more than 50-60 pounds. When you have your shipment prepared, it is time to bring out the tape measure and obtain the length, width, and height (L x W x H).
Purchase a simple multi-tester or multi-meter for less than ten dollars and perform the following test. With the car off, leave the headlights on for about 2-3 minutes. Set an alarm so you do not drain the battery, and turn the headlights off when it goes off. This will remove any surface charge. Set the multi-tester dial so it registers in the 20 Volt DC range. You can read the multi-tester instructions or research its use online. A multi-tester is very simple to use. Touch the red lead to the positive battery terminal, and the black one to the negative. A healthy, fully charged battery should read around 12.5-12.8 Volts. This will vary with temperature (lower temperatures mean lower voltage), but should never be below 12 Volts. Another optional suggestion is to touch the black multi-tester lead to your engine or a metal part of the vehicle. If the voltage is substantially lower you may have a bad cable connection.
Each of the hand crank lead screws goes through an end plate that's bent from the leg support sheet metal. If you look closely, you'll notice that the lead screw plate is secured to the sidewalls by two sheet metal "ears" and two small dimples in the sidewalls. That looks like a potential source of failure downstream: nothing prevents the sidewalls from separating and allowing the crank to become loose. My fix? Simple: I installed a clamping and securing bolt through the sidewalls just behind the end plate. To secure the sideplates and preventing them from spreading apart, about 1 inch from the end plate, I drilled a ¼" clearance hole through the two sideplates (that also mount the legs) and put a 1 ½ inch long, ¼ -20 bolt with a washer and a locknut. Tightening the locknut makes the endplate securely clamped to the sidewall plates; this will prevent any tendency for that endplate holding the leadscrew and cranking handles from coming loose over time.
